Ar Raheeq Al Makhtum (الرحیق المختوم, The Sealed Nectar) is the biography of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that won first prize in the worldwide Seerah competition of the Muslim World League, chosen from 171 entries. This is the complete Urdu edition published by Maktaba Salafiyyah, Lahore: a 500 page hardcover in the standard 14x21 cm size, printed in one colour on white paper, the same edition (SKU 88992012) sold by the leading Islamic bookshops of Pakistan. Written by Safiur Rahman Mubarakpuri, it tells the Prophet's ﷺ life from the Arabia he was born into to his final days in Madinah, with every event traced to the Quran, the authentic Hadith and the early books of Seerah.

What is inside Ar Raheeq Al Makhtum

The book follows the Seerah in order, so a first time reader can start at page one and finish with a clear picture of the whole life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:

  • Arabia before Islam: the tribes, the geography of the peninsula, the religion of the Arabs, and the lineage of the Prophet ﷺ back to Ibrahim and Ismail عليهما السلام.
  • Birth to prophethood: the year of the Elephant, his childhood in the care of Halima, Abdul Muttalib and Abu Talib, his trade journeys, his marriage to Khadijah رضي الله عنها, and the first revelation in the cave of Hira.
  • The Makkan years: the secret call, the open call, the torture of the early Muslims, the two migrations to Abyssinia, the boycott of Banu Hashim, the year of sorrow, the journey to Taif, Isra and Miraj, and the pledges of Aqabah.
  • Hijrah and Madinah: the migration, the building of the mosque, the brotherhood between Muhajirin and Ansar, and the charter with the tribes of Madinah.
  • The battles: Badr, Uhud, the Trench, Banu Qurayzah, Khaybar, Mutah and Hunayn, each explained with its causes, its course and its lessons.
  • Treaties and letters: the treaty of Hudaybiyyah and the letters sent to Heraclius, Kisra, the Negus and the rulers of Egypt, Bahrain and Yamamah.
  • The final years: the conquest of Makkah, the delegations of the ninth year, Tabuk, the farewell Hajj and the passing of the Prophet ﷺ.
  • His character: a closing section on his appearance, manners and daily habits, drawn from the Shamail literature.

Why readers choose this book

Most Seerah books either drown the reader in chains of narration or leave out the evidence altogether. Mubarakpuri does neither. He writes as a historian, giving dates, places and the names of the people involved, and as a scholar of Hadith, quoting only what is sound. The Urdu is plain and warm, so the book works equally well for a student in a madrasah, a family reading a chapter after Maghrib, and a reader picking up the Seerah for the first time. It has been translated into English (The Sealed Nectar), Bengali, Turkish, French and many other languages, and remains the most widely read modern Seerah in the world.
