Tafheem ul Quran (تفہیم القرآن) is the Urdu translation and tafseer of the Quran by Syed Abul A'la Maududi, written over thirty years, from 1942 to 1972, and one of the most widely read tafseers in the Urdu language. This is the complete six volume set from Idara Tarjuman ul Quran, Lahore, in the Aala (superior) binding: 4,756 pages in the 18x25 cm size, in black hardcovers with the volume number on each spine.

What the six volumes contain

The set covers the whole Quran from Surah Al-Fatiha to Surah An-Nas. Volume 1 begins with Al-Fatiha and ends with Al-An'am, and each later volume continues in the order of the mushaf.

  • Every surah opens with an introduction on its name, period of revelation, background and main themes.
  • The Arabic text is followed by Maududi's idiomatic Urdu translation, which reads like natural Urdu prose.
  • Detailed explanatory notes follow, explaining each passage in its setting and showing how it applies today.

Why Tafheem ul Quran is so widely read

Maududi wrote for the educated reader. He explains the Quran in the setting in which it was revealed and then shows how it speaks to modern questions of belief, society, law and government, in some of the finest Urdu prose of the twentieth century. Students, teachers, khateebs and families keep the set as their main reference, and it has been translated into English as Towards Understanding the Quran and into many other languages.
